Content Management Systems (CMS)

Content Management Systems (CMS) allow editing of a website's text and images without the need to be a web designer. The system I have chosen is user-friendly, intuitive and browser based which means you can logon and update your website from anywhere in the world with an internet connection.

How it works.
Each web page you visit is written in code which your browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome, Safari etc.) reads and converts into the page you see. What I do is insert special code allowing certain parts to be editable by my nominated CMS.

You simply login to a website and you can change your page.

Below you can see an example of just how easy it is to take control of your website and avoid recurring costs from web designers!

An example of CMS in action.
Step 1.

I produced a brochure website to promote a luxurious holiday rental property in Portugal and included in the price was our CMS solution to allow them to easily update the website, a perfect example!

Below is how our website currently looks and I'm going to use the CMS system to change the main title "Luxury Apartment Rental in Portugal" and the image at the bottom of the page

How the page is currently

Step 2.

To do this we logon to our CMS website and select the page to edit from a drop down list.

The CMS website displays the components of our page that we can edit, in this example the main title and the content on the left hand side where our image is.

Step 3.

Let's start with the title, currently it reads "Luxury Apartment Rental in Portugal".

Editable Regions

I am going to change it to read "Luxury Apartment in The Algarve", to do this we simply edit the text currently in the box.

Editable Regions

Step 4.

Next we will change the picture at the bottom of the page. First we select the tab at the top which reads "Left Content" as this is where our image lives.

Editable Regions

Then we can scroll down, highlight the image and click the image button on our toolbar.

This will then open up a new box where we can either select a replacement image. This can be either on the website already or we can upload one from the local machine. We're going to do the latter.

The file we're going to upload is an image of a bottle of Champagne and I've browsed to find the folder on my machine.

The CMS system has now uploaded the file onto the web server so we can highlight it and click on the "Select File" button

All that now remains is to hit the butotn that says "Publish to Web" and our site will be updated, see below!
